Description
A Little Blue Heron perched on the protective rocks surrounding the Sarasota Bay rookery islands, in Sarasota, Florida. These smaller Herons are so strikingly beautiful in their deep, gray-blue plumage and blue legs. A "rookery" is a wild bird nursery, where (in this case) multiple species of birds congregate to build their nests and raise their young. The ones here in Sarasota Bay have Great Blue Egrets, Little Blue Egrets, Roseate Spoonbills, Brown Pelicans, Great White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cormorants, and more that all nest closely together on the Mangroves covering the islands. The rookery islands are surrounded by barriers to keep curious tourists and residents from disturbing the birds and chicks in their nests. Many of the cruise boats on the bay bring visitors near the rookery islands so they can get a close look at these beautiful birds and their chicks. Active nests can usually be found from early spring through August.
