Description
Mom and baby Sandhill Crane crossing a pond in our neighborhood. Until I saw the family swim across the pond that day, I had no idea these long-legged birds could swim - what a fun surprise, especially seeing the little downy, golden baby walk right in and swim next to his mom! Sandhill Cranes are migratory in most of the US, but here in Florida, they're year-round inhabitants. This pair has lived in our neighborhood for several years and have raised many clutches of babies. Typically (as in this case), they have two babies in a clutch, and the babies stay with their parents for several months (sometimes up to 10 months).
