Description
This shot of a group of Black Skimmers and Gulls was taken right after sunrise on Lido Beach. Lido Beach is on Lido Key, a barrier island that is part of the city of Sarasota, Florida. The Black Skimmers return to Lido Beach each spring and summer to mate and raise their chicks. Nests are simply scraped out depressions in the sand where they lay their eggs. Nesting is from May - September. During the winter, the Black Skimmers may remain near their breeding grounds or move further south in Florida. We see them year-round, but only in these large numbers during nesting. Chicks are vulnerable to gulls and other predators as their parents leave them on the sand while they hunt for food. Adult Skimmers fish by flying low over the water, dragging their lower bill in the water to scoop up small fish.
