Description
A magnificent view of Mt. Hood as we fly out of Portland, Oregon. You can see the year-round snow and glaciers (this was photographed in late August) as well as a bit of the Columbia River valley and a beautiful mountain lake. Mt. Hood, one of the dormant volcanoes in the Cascade Range, is only about 50 miles outside of Portland, Oregon, and is a must-see destination for visitors to the area.
The Cascade Range is volcanic and its peaks are considered to be dormant but not dead volcanoes (as evidenced by the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1981). The highest of the peaks in the range (including Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and others) are all well over 10,000' tall and many have fantastic skiing available. Mt. Hood has glacier skiing available in summer as well as several winter ski areas. The winter snowfall can exceed 12', making for a long ski season!
