Description
Passing over Mt. Hood as my plane leaves Portland, Oregon, is always a thrill. This view of Mt. Hood, which is about 50 miles east of Portland, is looking south and includes what I believe are Mt. Jefferson and at least one of the Three Sisters.
The Cascade Range is volcanic and its peaks are considered to be dormant but not dead volcanoes (as evidenced by the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1981). The highest of the peaks in the range (including those pictured here and Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and others) are all well over 10,000' tall and many have fantastic skiing available. Mt. Hood has glacier skiing available in summer as well as several winter ski areas. Most winters drop 12' or more of snow on these mountains, making for a long ski season!
