Description
Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida, has several sandbars just off shore. During low tides, people and birds love to walk out through the shallow waves to the sand bars to enjoy this unique beach experience. On this day (April, 2015) the snowbirds (people who come for extended stays every winter/spring) and shore birds took full advantage of the low tide.
This was the first time I had seen this many birds at Siesta Key Beach. There are always flocks of shore birds, but this day the skies were literally white with them. It was a magical sight as the birds soared then landed everywhere on the beach. This particular flock made up primarily of Royal Terns, was one of the smaller flocks. Royal Terns are beautiful white birds with bright red-orange beaks and black "tomahawk" crests. They make spectacular dives for the small fish that swim in the shallows along the coast.
