Description
The Black Skimmer colony on Lido Beach contains hundreds of Skimmer families. They return to this same spot year after year to mate and raise their chicks, then disperse throughout South Florida. Nests are really just depressions in the sand with no nesting material and (as you'll see in other photos in this same gallery) chicks are often left alone and vulnerable to gulls, crabs, and even other Skimmers while parents fish. Skimmers have a unique way of fishing, by dragging (skimming) their lower beak in the surf, scooping up small fish as they fly low over the waves. They are beautiful, sleek, and have a wide wingspan. Lido Beach is on Lido Key, a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, and is part of the city of Sarasota, Florida.
