Description

A special moment between an Egret chick and its mom. The chicks are pretty ugly at this stage, but as you can see from their Mom, they grow up to be beautiful, especially in mating season when they get the long, wispy breeding feathers you see hanging over the branches behind her. The nest is across a pond on a rookery island near Venice, Florida. The Venice Rookery is managed by the Audubon Society and consists of a lake with an island in the middle. The island is covered with Mangroves where many different bird species build their nests. Alligators sometimes live in the lake surrounding the Rookery. This location is a favorite spot for photographers, providing great opportunities to get relatively close shots.
