Description
A Least Tern's sunrise fishing expedition. She was probably fishing to feed her chick, since the Tern nesting site was packed with baby Terns waiting for breakfast. Least Terns are very acrobatic diving birds that often dive for fish from as high as 30 feet from the water. They hover first, then dive headlong into the surf. Lido Beach is one of their nesting sites where you can see hundreds of Terns, eggs, and newly hatched chicks each spring and summer. Lido Key is one of the barrier islands of Sarasota, on the Gulf of Mexico.
