Description
Beautiful, Yellow Crowned Night Herons joined us for lunch at a bayside café on Casey Key. I hadn’t seen this type of Heron before and had to do a little research to determine what type they were. They are smaller than Great Blue Herons and larger than Green Herons (you’ll find both in this gallery). Casey Key is one of the barrier islands just south of Sarasota, Florida. It is a very narrow island, with the Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Most of it is a very exclusive neighborhood of beautiful, multi-million-dollar homes, many of which have both Gulf and ICW views because Casey Key is so narrow in spots. But toward the southern-most end, there is beach and bay access, hotels, beachy restaurants, marinas, and boat/kayak launches. Some of the original photographs of these birds have been digitally painted as watercolors, as this one has, while others remain as original photos. I’ve also created two diptychs of the painted versions, one with “Yellow Crowned Night Herons” printed at the bottom, and the other plain. All versions are available in this gallery.
